COURSE NO. 1

This course is designed for people of all ages, in their own private vehicles.

PRACTICAL DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE
Start: 9.00 am
Finish: 3.00 pm

THEORY

The course opens with a theory component of approximately forty minutes. This deals mainly with concentration and smoothness in driving. It also covers the maintenance of vehicles with emphasis on those parts that are vital to the vehicle's handling capabilities.



































PRACTICAL

The rest of the course is conducted with the driver behind the wheel of their vehicle. It is conducted in a safe environment under the control of licensed qualified instructors. To obtain maximum benefit for the student it is recommended that each student have their own vehicle.

The course is structured to build confidence, starting off with very easy exercises and then gradually increasing the degree of difficulty.

Exercises include :

Precision driving; testing judgement and concentration
Slalom driving through witches hats
Braking exercises, including smooth, progressive and emergency braking
Emergency procedures
Swerve and recovery
Reaction time tests, to avoid rear end smashes
Brake and evade at different speeds

COURSE NO. 2

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE RECOVERY COURSE

For people who wish to go off road, (eg. mining companies, Government Departments, or any one who wishes to learn 4wd recovery techniques)

One Day Course.

Start Time 8.30 am. Finish Time Approx. 4.00 pm.

Approximately 2 hour theory dealing with:

Concentration
Vehicle control, engaging free wheeling hubs and four-wheel drive
Video on all aspects of 4 wheel driving
Smoothness in driving
Safety, a priority in all aspects of 4wd vehicle control

Approximately 2 hours practical in soft sand dealing
with vehicle recovery:

Sand Mats
Winches
Bull Bags
Vehicle Jacks
Snatch Straps
Correct gears and momentum

Approximately 2 hours practical on steep incline driving

Reverse stall starts on steep incline
Selecting correct gear for incline and decline
Using gears for braking on steep declines
Safety procedure on any incline
Importance of right momentum

Short time on bitumen or gravel to demonstrate the effects of high centre of gravity vehicles.

COURSE NO. 3

For corporate clients who employ people to drive and maintain Company or Departmental vehicles.

PRACTICAL DEFENSIVE DRIVING COURSE

THEORY SESSION

Time allowed: Approximately 2 hours
Outline of course: Concentration (its many facets)
Reaction time
Safety procedure on any incline
Importance of right momentum
Importance of constant visual surveillance
Workplace health and safety (video)
Student participation: Reaction time tests
Eye tests for focus time and distance
Eye test for distance can be arranged
Vehicle control: Smoothness in driving
Tyre grip area on road (illustrated)
Importance of vehicle maintenance

Your responsibility and attitude towards

Vehicle Instability of high clearance vehicles (4wd)
Skids – Front end
Skids - Rear end
Brake lock-up
Road rules: Australian Road Laws\
Any special group applications

Note: Many new vehicles are equipped with anti-lock brakes, air bags, traction control and electronic stability systems. It is very important that drivers understand these concepts, and the practical workings of these units for their own safety.

PRACTICAL SESSION

Time allowed: Approximately 4 hours

This section of the course is designed to enable progressive development. Students begin with very simple driving exercises which are structured to enable the instructor to assess both the driver and vehicle. The driver develops an awareness of their ability As the day progresses, the exercises become more difficult. In addition, as the skills learnt in one exercise are developed, they are used in the next.

Brief inspection of vehicles: Tyres, battery, fan belts, hoses
Driving up to markers, over markers, through narrow gate
Slalom driving
Reversing
Most effective braking techniques – marking distances
Swerve and recover
Reaction time test
Braking and evading at different speeds

The course concludes with a debrief and group evaluation.ADTC is a Nationally Registered Training Organisation, and successful participants will receive a certificate.
